Rosario Caccavella

S.O.S. Signs or Symbols.

My project explores the visual aspects of many different codes and language systems used to communicate information in the face of various challenges such as distance, blindness, over digital media, or from ship to ship on the open sea.

The work plays with encoded versions of various famous aphorisms such as Hippocrates’
“Ars Longa, Vita Brevis”, and Descartes “Cogito, ergo Sum”. These phrases are written using various code systems such as: nautical signal flags, Morse code, Braille, binary encoding, semacode, semaphore, and other code systems.

Originally drawn to the visual aspects of these codes, as I learned about their
historical context and the technological challenges that they were designed to overcome,
I began to see them more as metaphors for the importance of information and the way that people will always find any way to overcome obstacles and communicate.
