Michaela Spiers

My project started from my dissertation ‘Are Men the New Women?’ where I explored how men were signified within contemporary advertising and whether this lessened the strength of ‘the male gaze’ which had usually framed women within the same media. Men have become increasingly feminised and sexually exposed by the media, mirroring developments within society and conveys how advertising boundaries are consistently pushed.

My project aims to raise debate how these ideas will develop in the near future.
Will it be the norm for men to fashion the latest Jimmy Choo or for the gay society to overpower well-known brands such as Calvin Klein? Are we as a society ready for these images or are we still stuck in the past where feminism is still the main topic for debate?
